Re: Random - TI59 Web Site
And, I believe NIM was the game of the 21 sticks that you have to take turns picking up, right? I remember playing that game and trying to fool the device, but after a while it would win all the time Yes, it was the game of the 21 sticks. It was sort-of my first introduction to expert systems, syst...

Re: Random - TI59 Web Site
Ah... that makes sense. 1 Mb ? What was I thinking... I also recall that a lot of people were writing programs and sharing them with other users for a small fee. It was sort-of the first generation of user's groups :-) I remember getting such a program about the learning game of NIM (I think). It wa...

Re: Random - TI59 Web Site
Not as random as you think :-) Although I was not an enthusiastic user of TI products (I was more of an HP person), I do recall dabbling a bit into the Algebraic notation, what a blasphemy :-), first with a TI-58 and the with a TI-59 (their popularity was declining when I started using them). What I...

Re: Scilab exponential interpolation
Howard, I think you are way off in your thinking. I don't know who told you that interpolation only has to be simple, or only linear, or... but whoever it was, they were lying to you :-) The complexity, accuracy, etc. of the interpolation is only limited by the knowledge of the user regarding the p...

Re: Scilab exponential interpolation
Thanks, everyone. I do understand what everyone is saying about how to interpret and use statistics, in general, but I think everyone missed the original request, i.e., if anyone had a scilab script for exponential interpolation :-) In any case, I am working on putting one together right now. If I ...

Re: Scilab exponential interpolation
Not sure how I can best explain this. It's a classical mistake people make with statistics. They think it's magic and somehow it comes up with some sort of equation that all of a sudden describes reality. It can, but only if the one performing the analysis know something about the process and can va...

Re: Benford's Law - this is great
Well, I don't know how helpful it is, but I found another short paper on this site's "techs" section that deals with this subject. http://triusinc.com/techs/QuickBenford_Karahalios.pdf It's fairly simple and doesn't go deep into math, but it may provide some additional insight. Wow, actua...

Re: Benford's Law - this is great
Yes, I had looked at it a while ago and I had analyzed the populations of 227 countries in 1950. It was a quick and dirty thing, but here is what the results looked like: Pretty good, IMO. The first digit frequencies seem to agree with Benford's law.

Re: Benford's Law - this is great
Wait, isn't that exactly what his premise is? That "made up" numbers are not random, in terms of the first digit?
I may have totally misread this, but I think what you found proves his point.

Re: Scilab exponential interpolation
Not sure if this helps, but I found this folder with a whole bunch of docs, on this board and there is a document there about exponential interpolations Doc: Exp_Interpolations_Karahalios.pdf Link: ( http://triusinc.com/techs/Exp_Interpolations_Karahalios.pdf ) Take a look and see if it's what you ...

Re: Scilab exponential interpolation
I mistakenly posted my question in different thread (sorry about that), so I am re-posting here. First, this board is great. I find better answers here than what I am finding in the scilab specific forums. I guess those other forums are for people that already have expertise on the subject. I also ...

Re: Stolen radioactive material - mexico
It's not as major an event as you think. Sure, it should not be taken lightly, but it does happen and there are processes and procedures to deal with it. True, it happens all the time, such radiographic sources get stolen, or lost and everyone freaks out, thinking that all of a sudden people are go...
