Re: Approximate pi with scilab
Yup, that TRIUS partner would most likely be Paris Karahalios (based on the filename you posted). Worked with him many years ago (35+) when he was still in the nuclear field. Prolific author and keen ability to come up with math and computer models for pretty much everything.

Re: Good Basic Shielding Documents
Hey Paris, did we work together at S&W in the shielding group, or do I have the wrong Paris? I did work for S&W (SWEC) for a few years right out of college, so most probably you have the right Paris :-) The group was called Radiation Protection. It sure was called Radiation protection. Wow,...

Nuclear Energy FAQ - Argonne
Very short document with some very good answers to general questions about nuclear. For example: Don’t nuclear power plants spew out a lot of radiation? Nuclear plants emit almost no radiation. Ironically, coal-fired power plants emit about three times as much radiation as nuclear power plants due t...

Re: Risk Assessment in Light of Radiaiton
No, Howarde, that's not what I'm saying at all. I am saying that if en event has a calculated expected frequency on 1 per 1000 year and we started measuring today and the event took place in the first year, it's frequency of occurrence doesn't all of a sudden change to 1 per year, though that event ...

Re: Risk Assessment in Light of Radiaiton
Howard, you may be a bit confused about the whole probabilities concept. I can't claim to be a statistician or risk expert, but when some event has a probability of occurrence of, let's say, 2 per 1000 years, it doesn't mean that it will happen once at 500 years and once more at 1000. The even, for ...

Re: Stop subsidizing nuclear!
Subsidizing nuclear is such a myth... People think that " The bulk of government energy subsidies have gone to nuclear energy ." Fact: An exhaustive study of federal energy incentives spanning the past 60 years has been released by Management Information Services Inc., a D.C.-based economi...

Re: Dosimetry Power Point
The info in slides 51-56 floored me! So, coronary angiography can result in those types of injury? I would have never thought that the radiation doses involved would be of such level! What exactly is causing the high doses? That is very interesting to me, as well. Who would have thought! I also see...

Re: No rise in cancer seen from Japan's nuclear disaster - U
Doesn't that make sense? If you evacuate 100's of thousands of people and they don't get exposed, you eliminate a LARGE collected dose that would statistically have resulted in a large number of cancer deaths being predicted. No surprises there.
